The Felt Manor was built in 1848 by Lucius Felt, the owner of a dry goods store on Galena's Main Street and also a director of the Merchants National Bank. The home was originally built in the Greek Revival style and later remodeled in 1874 to the fashionable Second Empire style, adding the iconic mansard roof that can be seen across town. During the renovation, the third floor attic was converted into a grand ballroom with two adjoining parlors that the Felts used for entertaining.

The double stone staircase connecting the home to Prospect Street was added in the 1860s and is listed with the Library of Congress as a National Historic Landmark. Dubbed ‘Felt's Folly' by locals, Lucius Felt spent an impressive $40,000 to have the steps chiseled into the limestone hillside, at a price that would be equivalent to over $1.3 million today.
