History

Felt Manor was built in 1850 by Lucius Felt and his wife Catherine. Mr. Felt owned a dry goods store on Galena's Main Street and was a friend of Ulysses S. Grant, who received a hero’s welcome when he returned home to Galena following the end of the Civil War.

The home was originally built in the Greek Revival style and remodeled in 1874 to the very fashionable Second Empire style, adding the iconic mansard roof that can be seen from across town. During this renovation, the third-floor attic was converted into a grand ballroom with two adjoining parlors that the Felts used for entertaining.

The double stone staircase connecting the home to Prospect Street was added in the 1860s and is listed with the Library of Congress as a National Historic Landmark. Dubbed ‘Felt's Folly' by locals, Lucius Felt spent an impressive $40,000 to have the steps carved into the limestone hillside, at a price that would be equivalent to over $1.3 million today.
